i worked from home a bunch the week of may 23. (and today i write this from a hotel couch in rural ohio..) it’s nice to be home during the day: alidoro is open, murray’s cheese shop makes grilled cheese, police horses hang outside on the street. a second dos toros location opened in the west village that week, too—what a delicious disaster that has been.
tim moved away for real that week. roberta’s is popular enough that even a table at 9pm on tuesday (granted, for a larger group) requires a two-hour wait, so to momo around the corner it was—party bombs and funny menu cartoons. and goodbyes.
cara and brad came up to new york for that long memorial day weekend. they both started to pop the “wanna be in my wedding?” questions that weekend, and guess who’s gonna be brad’s best man! so by mid-2012 i’ll have been in five weddings and been the best man in three of those five. don’t these new york flakes realize that i’d make a pretty good friend?
saturday we went to queens for my first time. there was a czech and slovak festival going on at the astoria beer garden, meaning dancers and gymnasts for tipsy entertainment. adam directed us to the lemon ice king of corona, as seen on my favorite, favorite tv show—peanut butter italian ice was the unlikely but clear winner.
mets game next—citi field marked the 16th notch on my baseball stadium belt, wow.
the frying pan is a big dock/boat bar thing on the hudson. brad and i headed there on sunday (after brunch and eastern bloc) to hang with anjali neha and nitesh. it’s pretty fun—being outside in new york’s warm months is quite tough to beat.
i walked around a lot on monday (labor day), partially because i like walking and partially to distract me from my competing funks of (a) “ugh how can this place feel so lonely sometimes” and (b) “so you had a fantastic two days with your friends and now you feel sorry for yourself for being ‘alone’ for a bit? get some perspective dude.”
the world’s largest sailing yacht was docked at the end of the the driving range at chelsea piers—you could spot its distinct sails/masts all the way from the high line. it’s scale is impressive.
nathan showed up that night—that was nice. we ate at madison square eats, this fun little food and drink fest across from the park, complete with a roberta’s stand. an obligatory trip to pieces probably should have been the end of the night, but we went to show tunes at splash instead. and it was pretty fun! my opinion is of course influenced because “defying gravity” is one of the few show tunes i know and it was playing right as we walked in.
and then may 2011 was over!
