extra pickles

other vices: busch light, dance floors

the first week being off a project (aka being “on the beach”) is pretty great—lot’s of time to “transition” and “make hand-offs” and not a lot of “business development” work yet (combined with the normal excessive use of made-up business-y terms).  business was in a lull around then so there wasn’t much to do, though i was still pretty shocked to be the only one who came to the office on tuesday, may 3.

i followed their leads and took off around 2pm.

sometime around then, tim dropped the “oh by the way i’m moving to hawaii” bomb.  exciting for him!  bad for my already limited set of social resources.  and just sucky in general—he’s always a really fun one to be around.

so i spent the next few weeks making an effort to hang with him on a more regular basis.  bar 82, a strange and hot 5th-floor photography show (not even the wine could help it), some outside la esquina, and a little nowhere (if you’ve never been to nowhere on a tuesday, you’re in for a treat.. of sorts)—a nice little day that may 3 was.

on thursday i walked home and stumbled upon a new installation in madison square park—a giant white head.  giant.  that park really likes scale.  it’s by jaume plensa.  i didn’t know his name, but was interested to learn he’s also behind the big water-spurting face fountain things at millennium park in chicago.  (more from the nyt.)

it was cinco de mayo that day and the line for dos toros was ridiculous.

on friday i hung out with my 21-year-old coworker.  21!  ridiculous.  he had never been to pieces.  ridiculous.

saturday was pretty fun.  i wasn’t aware that a lay person could just walk into christie’s and see auction previews.  i’ll have to dedicate an entire post to it some other time.  it’s quite interesting to see museum-quality pieces in a commercial setting—warhols, rothkos and the like expected to go for $30m—and the people-watching is just as, if not more interesting than the art.

i made a non-sugarland trip to williamsburg that night with tim, to public assembly.  before i got inside i saw a parked car go up in flames—started out just steaming a bit, and 10 minutes later a fire engine was hosing it down.  brooklyn is strange!  there were a bunch of strange bands playing at public assembly, one named tayisha busay—a sort of indie electro fun-poking trio.  it was funny.  (there also happens to be a tayisha busay sticker on the mirror in the bathroom at sugarland.)

sunday i went with tim to explore other parts of brooklyn.  park slope and fort greene i think.  or maybe i have that completely wrong—my sense for the borough is still very limited.  but i like it!  it’s nice to have a little more space and a little less hustle than around my apartment.

but something that can only be had around my apartment is pieces, and we ended sunday there playing some evening bingo.

and that’s the kind of weekend i like!
