the next week i went to five guys for the first time since moving here. (extra pickles has its roots in five guys receipt from two and a half years ago [wow].) the cashier gave me a little sass with her “just the way i like it too” reply to my order—it’s not that weird i don’t think.
on friday (january 21) i went to pieces and happened upon brett. that was quite nice. in him i’ve met my match in hair poofiness and photo hunt abilities.
saturday was fantastic. i was this close to just sitting around all day, but instead decided to try my luck at the lottery for wicked tickets. i got up there with about 5 minutes to spare, entered my name, and was the very first person called as a winner! front row tickets for $27. front row. i was thrilled. it was such a production—a million set changes, an animatronic dragon over the whole stage, flying everything. and being so close to the stage really is amazing.
the guggenheim is “pay what you want” on saturday nights, so i went up there that evening. pretty cool building.. which was unfortunately almost completely shut down while they prepared for a new installation. couldn’t walk along the ramps or anything. i’ll have to make another trip (and since i’m posting this three weeks after the fact, it’s now again fully reopen). the little portion of the museum that i was able to see was.. ok. i really liked a trio of little suerats in one gallery. the only other gallery was vasily kandinsky, which just wasn’t my thing.
that evening was a very cold one. i decided still to walk toward home from the guggenheim (not a short walk). it was my first time walking around the upper east side. 5th avenue (which runs on the east side of central park) has some pretty fantastic-looking residences. and i walked by the met—it is absolutely humongous! i don’t think i’ve even seen a building that large. i took my gloves off for about 90 seconds to snap a shot of a cool louis vuitton window display—whimsical animals made out of their items—and my fingers nearly froze off.
sugarland is becoming a saturday night staple for me, and that evening i ran into a guy i went to college with, matt. i didn’t know him, so i’m glad he said hi and that we’ve hung out a bit since. he’ll be a good friend to have.
sunday was good too—met up with adam and soni, went to this place dos toros to get “bay area style burritos” (i’m not convinced that’s even a proper thing, but it was indeed quite reminiscent of gordo and also damn good), and watched some football at a bar.
the two of them went back to brooklyn heights and i decided my sunday wasn’t quite over, so i headed to this bar called nowhere for the first time. what a dive! it makes pieces look like a posh club. but i don’t say that with much negative connotation—it’s still fun. at 8:30pm i started talking to this guy—just about anything and everything, really. at about 10:30pm we finally exchanged names—tim is his. and at 1:30am i decided i should probably go home. i still can’t get over that i just talked to some random dude for five hours. five hours. he’s super goofy and pretty out there—rare, one might say, but in a good way.
i’m glad i’m on the cusp of making some friends! that’s sort of a big deal for me. it’s nice to have some names in my phone that i can text and say “hey let’s hang out.”
