right across the street, a regal building caught my eye from inside the morgan library. it was a polish consulate (which obviously is on twitter) and outside sits a sculpture of jan karski, the first person to bring eyewitness accounts of the holocaust to the west. what’s coincidental is that this exact sculpture is also on georgetown’s campus—john pointed it out to me on one of our long afternoon strolls.
i haven’t been having the best of luck with yelp here—it’s as if there are just so many restaurants that my searches in a given area pull up way too many (often barely relevant) results. well, yelp pulled through big time this night, directing me to a korean buffet called woorijip. that’s almost a pound and a half of food and a can of the most popular beer in korea. it cost $12.67. everything for $12.67. that, combined with the morgan library being free, gives me some hope that it’s possible to not go broke in new york.
later on i went to this dance party in (gasp) brooklyn called GUMBO. it was pretty fun. sort of a mixtape equivalent in new york, i suppose. the dance floor is relatively small and no one was on it until later on in the evening, but the location (complete with a guy dangling from a trapeze!) is otherwise quite spectacular. i had coincidentally seen this place online while checking out places where brad and cara could have their wedding—“oh, this looks familar!”
and speaking of all these conincidences… i’ve had seven chance encounters since getting here. seven! when i was still traveling up from DC i saw (1) two college kids, tiff f and mike y, at dinner. then there was that time at ritz where i saw (2) will. a week later i saw (3) my high school boy will f at lunch. GUMBO was crazy a bit: saw will again, (4) paul and rusty were out at the same place along with (5) this guy rico i had met in rehoboth two years ago, and probably the most random of all was seeing (6) pam c from home on the subway at 3am. and this past saturday i ran into (7) my old work buddy selma on the street.
what a small little town.
