joining steely dan and hall & oates and girl talk on my phone, la roux’s “i’m not your toy” is my newest ringtone.  it’s an attention-grabbing tune, and lyrically i can’t think of a better ringtone to assign to all those players’ numbers that i know you’ve amassed.

“the new issue of playboy magazine features nude pictures of marge simpson… now a lot of people were shocked, and it may seem shocking at first, but this is not the first time this kind of thing has happened.  plenty of other cartoon characters have posed nude for magazines.”
this bit from conan was pretty good.  that latin inches was included made it great.

noisettes’ “don’t upset the rhythm” just won’t leave my mind.  it’s ironically starting to upset my own daily/personal rhythms.  (thanks, i’ll be here all week.)

the name noisettes reminds me of the pipettes and their song “pull shapes.”  you know, just in case you want two songs stuck in your head.

oh hello again

since my last highly controversial post 13 days ago, i’ve endured (HAHA KIDDING MOM) enjoyed a 7-day visit from my parents.  they got here 2 thursdays ago and stayed through last thursday, so that was quite nice—they hadn’t yet been out to see me in DC.

we played tourist.  extensively.  it was exhausting.  disappointments included taking officially organized tours of the capitol and the library of congress, but thankfully those were about the only letdowns.  highlights for me included the national cathedral’s organized tour, seeing an argument at the supreme court, watching the senate in session and voting (separate from an organized capitol tour), and the phillips collection.

we also ate out.  a lot.  not that my norms aren’t delicious, but a parental dining experience is always a little different.  in terms of upscale places i should probably avoid while unemployed, blue duck tavern, ristorante la perla, and central michel richard were all great.  the similarly regarded vidalia, though, was disappointing.  brunch at leopold’s in georgetown is also worth noting as a fun time.

in addition to my parents’ visit, 2 fun weekends have passed since my last post.  highlights of those include bowling a 161 (not too shabby for me), dancing at cobalt and wonderland and town and dc9, a fun party at ryan’s where an awkward new game emerged (“truth dare or strip” kings), an adult pizza party at lindsey’s where said awkward game was again played, being 2 feet away from lady gaga while marching for the gays, an ironically timed happy hour at hooters, and amassing 11 game pieces for mcdonald’s monopoloy.  hopefully tame yet telling pictures emerge to shed additional light.

i’ve had great luck with free stuff piles (as compared to, say, the prince of petworth and his can of green beans): a beach bag, a vhs copy of the corey haim / corey feldman hit “license to drive,” and this past saturday on my way to adam’s a 7 foot tall inflatable rocket.  sadly the package didn’t include the cement glue necessary to fully assemble it or the engine needed to launch it (300 feet high it claimed!), but that didn’t stop it from being entertaining.  we almost brought it to dc9 (because really, anything goes at a nouveau riche party)—maybe next time.

one year ago today, from an nyt article…

Defying President Bush and the leaders of both parties, rank-and-file lawmakers in the House on Monday rejected a $700 billion economic rescue plan in a revolt that rocked the Capitol, sent markets plunging and left top lawmakers groping for a resolution.
The stunning defeat of the proposal on a 228-205 vote after marathon talks by senior Congressional and Bush administration officials lowered a fog of uncertainty over economies around the globe. Its authors had described the measure as essential to preventing widespread economic calamity.
The markets began to plummet even before the 15-minute voting period expired on the House floor. For 25 more minutes, uncertainty gripped the nation as television showed party leaders trying, and failing, to muster more support. Finally, Representative Ellen Tauscher, Democrat of California, pounded the gavel and it was done.
In the end, only 65 Republicans — just one-third of those voting — backed the plan despite personal pleas from President Bush and encouragement from their presidential nominee, Senator John McCain. By contrast, 140 Democrats, or 60 percent, voted in favor, many after voicing grave misgivings. Their nominee, Senator Barack Obama, also backed the bill.
By the end of day, the Dow had fallen almost 778 points, or nearly 7 percent, to 10,365. Credit markets also remained distressed, with bank lending rates rising and investors fleeing to the safety of Treasury bills.

that was an interesting day to be working in financial services government affairs.  a bill passed five days later (complete with nascar subsidies) and the world was saved…

oh hello, neglected weblog.

i watched babel a few months ago and enjoyed this song, called “bibo no aozora” by ryuichi sakamoto and played in the last scene.  it’s definitely not a happy tune, but nor is it completely depressing—to me it just says a big “sigh” with some occasional (but limited) glints of hope.  so in addition to liking it, i guess i’m posting this song because it evokes the same emotions from me as does the current state of my life!

setting aside that the whole job search thing isn’t going very far, i can’t seem to catch any breaks in other parts of my life either.  from my unemployment benefits and retirement plan rollovers not being processed, to my digital camera being lost in transit for 6 weeks, to being exhausted on what shouldn’t be exhausting runs, stuff just hasn’t been going my way.

on the plus side, i’ve been having really fun weekends lately (this past one involved, among other things, a 7-foot inflatable rocket—pictures to come).  and my parents (hi mom) are coming to town this thursday (my dad’s 40th-year med school reunion offered a nice excuse).  and, well, i’m not (too?) depressed or anxious (referencing this article that’s been floating around).

so anyway, that’s all.  thanks for indulging me, john mccain style.

tonight’s the night that adam and i have been anticipating (and hyping up to everyone we know) for the past month: the next installment of DC’s most ridiculous dance party, WTF.  in case you didn’t believe my earlier post about how “wtf?” last month’s was, here’s some footage.  so many things made so little sense—i think there was as much laughing as there was dancing.

also funny is this yahoo! answers page i came across when trying to figure out the song in this video.  the answer: “that might be the jonas bros.”  watch the video.  it is not the jonas brothers.

this picture has surfaced from my recent trip to rehoboth.  from top to bottom it’s molly, joe on the left and adam on the right, vaughn lindsey and me.  so even though i lamented a bit in an earlier post that “socially everything is just more peripheral” in DC, i’d like to document that i do have these 5 good friends here.  and they’re pretty great.

i came back from new york on sunday afternoon and went immediately to lindsey’s (and joe’s—they’re roommates now!) for a labor day bbq.  lindsey just doesn’t know how to throw a bad party.  she had also just bought a new camera, so here are 10 of the 400 pictures taken that evening.

3 states and 4 banana republics later, i finally posses this heather purple t-shirt.  who knew it would take some much effort to find something so seemingly ubiquitous.
